The trainer
I was overweight before I became a personal trainer. That changes how I work.
My story
I grew up in Dublin. As a teenager, I was overweight — bullied for it, uncomfortable in my own skin, and with no real idea how to change it. I tried things. Most of them didn't work. I'd lose some weight, then put it back on again. The cycle was familiar to anyone who's been through it.
In my twenties I discovered nights out, bad food, and managed to pile on even more weight. When my father's health took a serious turn — years of heavy smoking and poor diet catching up with him — I made a decision. I wasn't going to end up in the same place.
I trained obsessively. Up early every morning, cycling into the city, long gym sessions, then walking home. I made every mistake going — wrong food, wrong approach, too much too soon. But over time, I figured out what actually worked. The weight came off. My fitness went from nothing to genuinely impressive. And I realised I wanted to help other people do the same thing faster, without the wasted years of trial and error.
I sold my bike, scraped together enough money for a personal training qualification, and built Bodycoach from scratch. That was 14 years ago.
Most PTs will tell you to eat less and move more. That's technically correct and completely useless without the context, the support, and someone who actually understands why you haven't managed it yet.
I know the difference between genuinely not knowing what to do and needing the right environment and accountability to actually do it. I've worked with complete beginners, people returning after years away, people managing injuries, people training for specific events, and people who've spent years doing the wrong things and getting nowhere.
My approach is direct and honest. I won't tell you what you want to hear, but I also won't make you feel bad for where you're starting from. Most clients say they look forward to sessions — which, for people who used to dread the gym, is the real result.
No crash diets, no magic programmes, no supplements. Calories in vs calories out, progressive training, habits that stick.
Max 4 per group session. You're not anonymous. I know your name, your goals, and how you moved last week.
Many clients had never set foot in a gym. The first session will meet you exactly where you are.
Rapid weight loss makes for good Instagram posts. Sustainable change is what I'm actually after.
All sessions are at Champions Gym, Longmile Road, Dublin 12, a private, well-equipped gym with a relaxed atmosphere. Not a big commercial box. No waiting for equipment, no intimidating atmosphere, no one staring.
I train clients from Tallaght, Clondalkin, Walkinstown, Crumlin, Templeogue, Terenure, Kimmage, Ballyfermot, Knocklyon and the surrounding area. If you're within a reasonable distance of Dublin 12 and you want to make a genuine change, get in touch.
What clients say
"Michael adapts the training to those highly experienced with gyms to those that aren't. He calls it as he sees it and helps you take accountability for your health and fitness. This is the best money I spend each week."— Gillian McCaan, client since 2022
