You Can Shove Your Chicken and Broccoli Diet

Bodycoach blog — why extreme diets don't work long term

In this day and age, people are raving about how much weight they can lose in such a short period of time. And yeah, that sounds fantastic. But they don’t tell you about the misery they went through to get that weight off so quickly.

Let’s be honest: diets are depressing.

I’ve had so many people come to me saying they lost a stone with some other coach. And I’m like — of course you did. You ate almost nothing. Every single person on the planet can lose a ton of weight living off chicken and broccoli. But there are two problems.

One: It’s unrealistic. Most people don’t have the willpower to stick to something that miserable for weeks on end. Nor should they have to.

Two: It’s not sustainable. Most people trying to lose weight will start a diet like this, see some results, be delighted — then two weeks in, they’re in a shop grabbing whatever they can because it’s just too hard to keep up. They feel like they’ve blown it. They haven’t. The diet was just unworkable.

There’s a Better Way

As I say to all my clients: to get achievable, consistent weight loss, watch your calorie input versus your calorie output. If you stay in a calorie deficit, you can eat what you want, be happy, lose weight over time, and not have to suffer through meals you hate.

Pizza tastes good. A glass of wine on the weekend is nice. Ice cream is nice. Enjoy it — and enjoy life. That’s the whole point of it.

If you need to lose weight, look at the right ways of doing it, not the hardest ways. The right way involves eating real food you actually like, tracking what you consume, and moving a bit more. Not hating every meal.
